BIO

Dr. Hordge-Freeman is Associate Professor of Sociology and Senior Advisor to the President and Provost for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of South Florida. She received her B.A. from Cornell University and her M.A. & Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University. Dr. Hordge-Freeman published her first book, The Color of Love: Racial Features, Stigma, and Socialization in Black Brazilian Families (The University of Texas Press) in 2015, which was the topic of her TEDx talk. This book was awarded the American Sociological Association Section (ASA) on Emotions Book Award, ASA Section on Body & Embodiment, and the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interactionism Charles Horton Cooley Book Award. She has published journal articles in the Journal of Marriage and Family, Qualitative Research, Ethnic & Racial Studies, International Journal of Qualitative Research, and Racial and Ethnic Studies. She also co-edited a volume entitled, Race and the Politics of Knowledge Production: Diaspora and Black Transnational Scholarship in the US and Brazil (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). In 2016, Hordge-Freeman received a Fulbright fellowship, Ruth Landes Fellowship, and a USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy grant to complete data collection for a manuscript entitled, Second-Class Daughters: Informal Adoptions as Modern Slavery in Brazil, which is based on nearly ten years of ethnographic data and interviews on labor exploitation.

Dr. Hordge-Freeman is passionate about teaching and has developed innovative pedagogical strategies that have garnered her recognition at the local, state, and national level. She was the inaugural recipient of the Outstanding Community-Engaged Teaching Award, the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and she was a national finalist for the Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty. In 2012, she launched the USF in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil program, an award-winning service-learning program focused on Brazilian culture and the impact of racism on Afro-Brazilians in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. She also enjoys working with faculty in her past roles as the faculty facilitator for the USF Community Engagement and Partnerships Service-Learning Bootcamp and Service-Learning Academy.
