Vita

Matthew Mullarkey is a professor of instruction in the School of Information Systems and Management at the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida. He is the director of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program. He is the executive director of the USF-TGH People Development Institute, a university level research institute and educational business activity authorized by the State University System of Florida's Board of Governors.  Mullarkey also serves as the coordinator of business outreach for the USF Muma College of Business.

Mullarkey is a Fulbright Core Research Scholar, an extraordinary associate professor in the Centre for Applied Research in Management at the North-West University (South Africa), an IIIS Interdisciplinary Fellow, a member of the Advisory Board for the Innovation Value Institute (IVI) at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, and a member of the Governance Committee for the USF Institute of Applied Engineering (IAE).

Mullarkey’s research is centered on the guided, emergent design of innovative technology systems, processes, products and services across disciplines and industries including health care, manufacturing, technology, defense, energy, nonprofit and government. Recent research topics include innovations and applications for smart cities, IoT, cybersecurity, data science, entrepreneurship, case research and technology education. He has more than 30 peer reviewed articles in leading journals and conference proceedings including the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS), IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (TEM), Information Systems Frontiers, Communications of the Association for Information Systems(CAIS), Journal of Research in Innovative Teaching & Learning, CORS/INFORMS, International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems, International Conference on Secure Knowledge Management in Artificial Intelligence, International Conference on Data Mining Workshops (ICDMW), and ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) among others.

Mullarkey teaches using case-based discussions that engage doctoral, MBA and undergraduate students in complex business decisions that typically involve a technology component. His case-study-based capstone courses emphasize critical thinking, business analysis and the impact of information technology and systems on real‐world, business decision‐making.

Mullarkey actively supports entrepreneurship and university to industry tech-transfer through his roles as a co-principal investigator on the 2018-2021 NSF I-Corps Site Grant, as a 2016 recipient of the NSF I-Corps National grant in his role as mentor, as a member of the USF I-Corps Site Committee, and as a USF I-Corps Site instructor. His service includes active engagement as an instructor, coach and mentor with startup companies involved with USF Connect, Tampa Bay WAvE, Florida-Israel Business Accelerator, and the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce Startup Scholars. Mullarkey is a board member with the Tampa Bay Technology Forum, Speak Up Tampa Bay and the Tampa Bay Community Network, the USF Institute for Research in Art Community Advisory Council, the West Point Society Florida West Coast, and a past member of the CEO Council of Tampa Bay.

Mullarkey works to integrate his business experience with the needs of the students, faculty, and administration of the USF Muma College of Business in ways that contribute to student education and preparation for jobs, increases partnering with the Tampa Bay business community, and informs research with impact.

Mullarkey earned a PhD in Business Administration (Information Systems) from the University of South Florida, an MBA (International Operations) from the University of South Carolina, an Master of Science degree in Systems Management (Information Systems) from the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the United States Military Academy (West Point).

Prior to joining the faculty of the USF Muma College of Business, Mullarkey spent 30 years in industry as a CEO, COO, CFO, EVP Operations, Managing Director, and General Manager primarily in the automotive, medical device, and engineered materials industries in Fortune 1000 and start-up businesses. He is a serial entrepreneur having started and exited four businesses in diverse areas of technology, home services, and management consulting. Mullarkey has been an executive in residence for a major private equity firm focused on health care and has been an officer at two NYSE-listed Fortune 1000 firms. Early in his career, Mullarkey was a decorated officer in the U.S. Army awarded the meritorious service medal (MSM), the Ranger Tab, and the Airborne, Pathfinder, Jungle Warfare and Expert Infantryman Badges.
