Empowering First-Generation Students: USF Launches Mu Sigma Chapter and Joins FirstGen Forward Network
The University of South Florida is proud to announce the opening of a chapter of Alpha, Alpha, Alpha (National Honor Society for First-Generation College Students), with the Mu Sigma chapter awarded to USF. This honor society provides an invaluable opportunity for first-generation students, whose parents have not earned a Bachelor’s degree, to connect, grow, and succeed throughout their college journey. The first induction ceremony will occur in Fall of 2025, aligning with the university's First-Generation celebrations.
First-generation students often face unique challenges as they navigate higher education. Their families may lack the knowledge to guide them through the college application process, financial aid, and the college experience. Without a familial blueprint, these students must navigate academic and social challenges with limited resources.
Through the Mu Sigma chapter, USF's first-generation students will have the chance to engage with peers across various disciplines, forging strong relationships with others who understand their experiences. They will also benefit from mentorship by more senior first-generation students, gaining valuable insights and advice. This mentorship will not only help students feel supported academically but also provide guidance on leadership development and personal growth. Membership in the society offers lifetime opportunities for involvement, creating a lasting impact on these students’ futures.
In addition to this new honor society, in 2024 USF was selected to join the FirstGen Forward Network, which further highlights the university’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for first-generation students. The FirstGen Forward Network adopts a three-phase approach to scaling student success by empowering institutions to improve academic and co-curricular outcomes and build more inclusive systems.
As part of these transformative initiatives, USF is laying the foundation for first-generation students to thrive both academically and personally, positioning them for long-term success. The combination of the Mu Sigma chapter, the FirstGen Forward Network, and other community support and activities is a powerful step in supporting USF’s growing community of first-generation students.
