Overview
NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS BUREAU
Our Neighborhood News Bureau opened its doors in March 2006 and is located in its own office at in Midtown St. Petersburg. A working newsroom that originated in 2001, staffed by our undergraduate and graduate students, it serves the campus and community in three ways.
- It provides training for journalism students at USF and other schools.
It functions as a community connection for collecting and disseminating information and news. - It produces stories, features and announcements for use by local and regional news media and community organizations, most recently the Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Tribune and Weekly Challenger. - It publishes a webmagazine, NNBnews.com.
Since 2016, the Bureau has been located in the Enoch D. Davis Center at 1111 18th Ave S.
Journalism Training
Graduate and undergraduate students at USF's St. Petersburg campus enroll in a for-credit class that helps staff the bureau and cover news. Other USF students participate through assignments and projects as components of various editing, design, photojournalism and reporting classes.
Students from local public and private schools, such as Academy Prep, Melrose Elementary, John Hopkins and St. Petersburg College, will be invited to collaborate with USF students on journalism assignments and activities. The NNB plans to conduct workshops for students and community journalists directed by USF faculty and volunteer instructors from professional news organizations.
Community Connection

News and Information Service
The NNB produces and provides to news and community organizations features, personality profiles, business stories, community calendars and neighborhood announcements.
Videoworks
VideoWorks is the in-house production studio for the Department of Journalism and Digital Communication. Opened in 2012 to serve as a course creation studio for the department’s 100% online master’s degree in Digital Journalism and Design, the studio has evolved to serve the USF St. Petersburg campus community and beyond.
The VideoWorks team produces course content, hosts student websites, facilitates real-time webcasting, and edits professional quality videography.

The Crow's Nest
USF St. Petersburg campus' student newspaper, The Crow’s Nest, is a 5-column tabloid published weekly. The newspaper welcomes students interested in writing, reporting campus news and photography and is not restricted to Journalism & Media Studies students. The Crow’s Nest is a student organization advised by a JDC faculty member each semester.

WUSF PUBLIC MEDIA
WUSF Public Media operates a working recording studio in the Peter Rudy Wallace Florida Center for Teachers. The studio is equipped with office space and a recording room so that WUSF can more easily cover news and events in Pinellas County. WUSF’s award-winning publication Health News Florida provides internship opportunities to students, giving them hands-on opportunities in and out of the studio.
