Africana Studies

Africana Studies at the University of South Florida is a transdisciplinary academic
unit that offers undergraduate and graduate courses on Africa and peoples of African
descent in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. Given our distinctive
commitment to the study of Africa and the global Black Diaspora, USF's Department
of Africana Studies is a leader in providing instruction on the foundations of Africana
Studies in Florida and a participant in shaping the themes and topics that define
our transdisciplinary field in the United States and the world.
USF's Africana Studies was founded in 1969 and is solidly grounded in rich, multidimensional
African and African American intellectual traditions. Students have the options of
pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies, a Minor in Africana Studies and a
Certificate in Africana Literatures. Africana Studies faculty members are nationally
recognized scholars who provide a strong intellectual foundation for our students
while also preparing them for careers in a broad range of professions including Law,
Social and Community Development, Media Relations, Cultural Studies instructors, Travel
and Tourism guides. The Africana Studies curriculum facilitates the development of
critical thinking skills while also challenging students to explore new ideas, seek
new connections and become actively engaged in the global community.
