IDEx in Sicily

In Summer 2017, USF IDEx (then USF CVAST) undertake an interdisciplinary collaborative research project aimed to virtualize the archaeological heritage of Sicily in partnership with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMI), the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAR) and the Department of Humanistic Studies (DISUM) of the University of Catania (Italy). The first field work focused on the Roman Villa del Casale at Piazza Armerina, the Greek site of Morgantina, the Late Antique site of Sofiana and the Greeka and Roman collection of the Archaeological Museum of Aidone. The project is still ongoing and soon the first deliverables will be disseminated, while and a second field work has been already scheduled for Summer 2018.

The state-of-the-art terrestial and close range laserscanners together with best practices in digital photogrammetry have been employed for a large scale virtualization project, in which several students of the three department of the University of Catania participated as interns. The co-supervisors of the project are Prof. Filippo Stanco (DMI), Prof. Cettina Santagati (DICAR) and Prof. Mariarita Sgarlata (DISUM) of the University of Catania.
