Mission & Goals

The mission of The Institute for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies (IREES) is to advance knowledge and understanding of Russia in a global, regional and historical context. The Institute is primarily concerned with promoting interdisciplinary research and teaching in three key areas related to global and human security, media and journalism, as well as culture and the arts.

An improved understanding of Russia is critical for our democracy and for global security. IREES seeks to educate students and the public not only about Russia and the surrounding region, but about various points of US-Russian conflict and cooperation.

 The Institute’s goals include:

KNOWLEDGE BUILDING: To improve fundamental understanding of Russia as a regional and global power, to promote dialogue between international scholars and professionals, and to enhance research and educational opportunities for USF students in various fields;

SKILLS BUILDING: To expand employment opportunities for USF students who are interested in careers where Russia is highly relevant, including diplomacy and security studies, theater, music and the arts, international business, media and journalism, as well as science and global public health;

COMMUNITY BUILDING: To enrich the intellectual, economic and cultural life of the Tampa Bay community by bringing together people who seek to better understand the Russian region and Russia’s impact on world affairs.
