Dr. Joan A. Reid is the Director of the USF Human Trafficking Risk to Resilience Research Lab located on the St. Petersburg campus. Her research interests include human trafficking, sexual violence, child maltreatment, victimology and recovery of crime victims. As a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), Reid has counseled individuals recovering from sexual trauma, including youth in foster care and detained in juvenile justice facilities, for over fifteen years.

Reid is the author of two books, Human Trafficking: Contexts and Connections to Conventional Crime and A Girls’ Pathway to Prostitution: Linking Caregiver Adversity to Child Susceptibility. In addition, she has published over 50 articles regarding human trafficking, sexual victimization and child maltreatment in journals such as Justice Quarterly, Sexual Abuse, and Child Maltreatment. She is an Associate Editor of Victims & Offenders: An International Journal of Evidence-based Research, Policy, and Practice.

Reid teaches courses in human trafficking, victimology and crime and mental health.
