Faculty Fulbright Information

Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program’s mission is to “foster mutual understanding between nations, advance knowledge across communities, and improve lives around the world.”  Fulbright offers passionate and accomplished faculty, administrator, artists, journalists, lawyers, and other professionals from all backgrounds an unparalleled opportunity to teach and conduct research while abroad.

Faculty who already have their Ph.D., or a terminal degree with significant professional experience, may apply either for a Fulbright Scholar Award (2 to 11 months) or a Fulbright Specialist Award (2 to 6 weeks). Fulbright IEA Awards are for those individuals who are higher level administrators, who work in international education, or who have done significant work with study abroad or international admissions. Fulbright Scholar Awards and Fulbright IEA Awards count for USF’s status of being a Top Producer of Fulbright Awards (in the category of Research Universities) for the past 5 years. USF was named the #1 Top Producer of Fulbright Scholar/IEA Awards of all research universities for 2016 and 2018.

Please note that these awards and the country priorities for scholars or administrators change every year. Therefore, it’s important to work with Dr. Darlene DeMarie (fulbright@usf.edu) to locate the award for which you will be the most competitive.

USF Fulbright Faculty Advisor

Dr. Darlene DeMarie has served as USF's Fulbright Faculty Advisor since 2014. She was awarded two Fulbright Scholar Awards: South Africa (2007-2008) and Hungary (2019-2020). She served as a Fulbright reviewer for CIES for 3 years (2010-2012) and , for the American Embassy in South Africa for 2 years (2008 & 2009). She also served as an outside reviewer for Fulbright Applications to the U.S. from Pakistan, Egypt, and Hungary. Under her leadership, USF has experienced unprecedented success with the Fulbright Program.

Dr. DeMarie offers a series of workshops during the fall, spring, and summer semesters to introduce faculty to the range of opportunities available through the Fulbright Program and to assist faculty with the writing process associated with a successful Fulbright application. Faculty who have completed the workshops and who attended subsequent writing groups have been more likely to be awarded a Fulbright Scholar Awards.

For information about the workshop series, please contact Dr. DeMarie at fulbright@usf.edu.

Current Opportunities

Fulbright Scholar Award

Faculty members hoping to obtain teaching, research, and teaching/research awards have until Wednesday, September 2020 to apply for the Fulbright Scholar Awards for 2021-2022. More than 800 teaching and/or research grants will be provided to U.S. faculty and experienced professionals. Please note you can only apply for one award, and it’s a good idea to select one for which your discipline and your expertise are priority areas for that year. There are awards for postdoc, early career, mid-level, and distinguished professors. Again, it’s important to match your expertise and activity to the award for which you will apply.

Fulbright International Education Administrators Program (IEA)

The Fulbright Specialist Program is for 2 to 6 weeks, and it is designed to promote networking and connections among U.S. scholars and professionals and their counterparts at various overseas institutions. World Learning now administers this program.

Fulbright Specialist grants are flexible and will allow the recipient to pursue projects that align with current academic or professional commitments. There are 6 deadlines per year (i.e., one every two months). The faculty member applies to be on the roster, and then an institution overseas applies to bring that scholar to their campus to do a project for them. Please note this award is not appropriate for early career scholars or for those faculty who are working towards tenure at USF. The Fulbright Specialist Award does not allow you to go to a place to do your own research. You should apply at least 6 months before you want to begin the project for your host.

U.S. international education professionals and senior higher education officials looking to network and connect with educational systems in various countries should apply for the Fulbright International Education Administrators Program. The 1 ½ to 2 week seminars are held in India, Japan, Korea, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Like Fulbright Scholar Awards, each country has different positions and people prioritized, so it is important that you work with Darlene DeMarie before you apply.
