C. Victor Fung has served on the Music Faculty at USF since 2004 and as founding Director of the Center for Music Education Research since 2005. His responsibilities include coordinating the Ph.D. program, advising Ph.D. students, and teaching graduate courses in Social Psychology of Music, Measurement and Evaluation in Music, Qualitative Research Methods in Music Education, and Music in Higher Education and the undergraduate course in Global Music Pedagogy in Local Context. He was recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor Award (2017) at USF.
Fung holds a Ph.D. in Music Education with minor areas in Ethnomusicology and Conducting from Indiana University, Bloomington and a Master of Music degree from Baylor University. Prior to coming to USF he has taught in Hong Kong, Minnesota, and Ohio. He has given open lectures and seminars at over thirty institutions in Brazil, China, Ireland, Japan, Turkey, and the United States.
Fung is author of A Way of Music Education: Classic Chinese Wisdoms (Oxford University Press: 2018) and Music for Life: Music Participation and Quality of Life of Senior Citizens (with Lisa Lehmberg, Oxford University Press: 2016). The latter is being translated into Chinese, published by Shanghai Education Publishing House (2021). He also has articles published in numerous professional journals and has served as a reviewer for a dozen such journals and as the editor for three. His recent research projects are in the areas of world music and multicultural music education, senior citizens’ music participation, and Asian philosophies in music education. He has given over a hundred presentations at professional conferences across four continents and was a Fulbright researcher in Japan (2018). He was a Board Member for the International Society for Music Education, the College Music Society, and Florida Music Education Association.
