Current Studies & Become a Subject

Research is the backbone of science. By being a research participant, you have the ability to contribute to science while also learning about yourself. We could not conduct research without our participants and are thankful to every one of them.

Project: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Phase 1/2 Study of OTO-413 given as a Single Intratympanic Injection in Subjects with Speech-in-Noise Hearing Impairment

Eligibility: Participants must be 21-64 years old with complaints of trouble hearing in background noise.

Goal: To evaluate an investigational drug that is delivered directly in the ear through the eardrum.

Project: Evaluation of Extended High Frequency Auditory Physiology as Feasible Clinical Audiology Measures [EHF Objective Measurements (FX-010)]

Eligibility: Participants must be a normal hearing individual aged 18-30 years old or an individual with sensorineural hearing loss aged 18-65 years old.

Goal: To evaluate hearing using very high-pitched sounds (also referred to as extended high frequencies; EHF), among normal hearing volunteers and patients with hearing loss.

Project: Development and Assessment of a Spanish-Language Toolkit for Hearing Loss Self-Management (Aim 2)

Eligibility: Participants must be Spanish-speaking adults, 50 years of age or older, who self-identify as having a Hispanic/Latino/LatinX background.

Goal: To develop hearing loss self-management materials for Spanish-speakers, and then to assess their benefit.

Project: Pilot Study to Evaluate the Long-term Chronic Care of Patients who could or do utilize an Osseointegrated Device (OID)

Eligibility: Participants must be 18-85 years old with a hearing loss that could benefit from OID hearing intervention.

Goal: To evaluate the cognitive, hearing, quality of life, and communication effects of OID hearing intervention among patients who could vs. do utilize an OID.

Contact Information: USF ARCT lab phone at 813-974-1262 or email us at arctlab@usf.edu; Mention the "OID Study".

Project: Auditory Ecology and its Relationship to Audiologic Intervention Outcomes in a Diverse Population

Eligibility: Participants must be 18-35 years old with normal hearing who identify as a White/Non-Hispanic or a non-White adult.

Goal: To understand how the sounds during our day-to-day lives impacts the listening and communication of adults from diverse racial and ethical backgrounds.

Contact Information: USF ARCT lab phone at 813-974-1262 or email us at arctlab@usf.edu; Mention the "Auditory Ecology Study”.

Project: Hearing Health Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs among Black Women: A Multi-method Analysis

Eligibility: Participants must be an African American female adult.

Goal: To identify knowledge gaps regarding hearing loss and hearing healthcare among Black women and determine whether the Health Belief Model (HBM) is an appropriate framework for exploring knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about hearing loss and hearing healthcare among Black adults, particularly women.

Project: Aging and Cognitive Health Evaluation in Elders (ACHIEVE) Randomized Control Trial (RCT)

Eligibility: Adults aged 70-84 years with hearing loss who were free of cognitive impairment at study start.

Goal: To determine the effect of hearing rehabilitative intervention versus a successful aging control intervention on rates of decline in global cognitive function in well-functioning and cognitively normal older adults with hearing loss.

Contact Information: USF ARCT lab phone at 813-974-1262 or email us at arctlab@usf.edu; Mention the "ACHIEVE RCT Study”.

Eligibility: Adults aged 70-84 years with hearing loss who were free of cognitive impairment at the start.

Goal: To compare the effect of the telehealth hearing health care (HHC) versus conventional HHC delivery models on hours of hearing aid use, hearing and communication outcomes, social functioning, quality of life, and utilization of services in older adults with hearing loss.

Contact Information: USF ARCT lab phone at 813-974-1262 or email us at arctlab@usf.edu; Mention the "ACHIEVE HIFU”.
