COURSES

SAW PALM

The mission of the Saw Palm journal is to go beyond the tourist brochures and capture the unique experience of Florida lives, landscapes, and tropes through the work of artists and writers in-state and out. Faculty Advisor John Fleming, PhD, founded the journal in 2008. USF MFA students manage and edit Saw Palm as part of the Literary Editing and Publishing Course.

AWARDS

Each academic year the Department of English holds creative writing contests in the areas of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, science fiction, and screenwriting. The contests are open to all enrolled University of South Florida students in any major and level (with one exception, see Thomas E. Sanders Scholarship). Awards usually include a modest scholarship and are presented to the award winners at the annual department scholarships & awards ceremony.

AFTER THE MFA

The USF MFA program is committed to preparing students for post-graduate employment and future literary endeavors. For those interested in teaching, the Department of English offers pedagogy courses in composition, creative writing, professional and technical communication, and literature. The department also offers graduate certificates in Digital Humanities and Professional and Technical Communication, and Comparative Literary Studies. USF English has a thriving graduate internship program that has placed MFA students in literary agencies, publishers, online magazines, and literary organizations. As part of the Literary Editing and Publishing course, students have started literary magazines, edited anthologies, written book reviews and weekly columns, and started freelance copyediting and writing businesses.
